An early morning call for police due to a domestic disturbance south of Denver in Highlands Ranch led to the shooting of multiple officers early on Sunday morning. The Douglas County Sheriff’s office responded to the call just before 5:15 a.m. MST at the Copper Canyon Apartments. The Sheriff’s Department tweeted out an update stating –

“UPDATE 0513 this morning deputies responded to the Copper Canyon Apartments for a Domestic Disturbance. During the Investigation, shots were fired and multiple deputies were injured. No status on the deputies and no status on civilian injuries. Please avoid this area.”

During the investigation, shots were fired, wounding multiple deputies. It is unclear if any civilians were shot, but the update said there is no status on their injuries, and a reporter from Denver7 says one was injured. A source in the sheriff’s office told KKTV it’s “not looking good for us” as shots were being fired at deputies, and video from the scene showed at least eight ambulances arriving.

This complex is on County Line Road, near Colorado Boulevard between University Boulevard. C-470 is closed from Quebec Street to University Boulevard and County Line Road is closed from Colorado Blvd. to University Blvd for the investigation.

Multiple deputies” were injured according to confirmation received from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The exact number of officers injured at this time is currently unknown.

A gunman is reportedly in custody, roughly three hours after the active shooter situation began. No information about the suspect has been released at this time. It is not known if the shooter in custody is the only shooter involved. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department and Colorado State Patrol are all on accident alert because of this incident.

According to Linda Watson, a spokesperson for Sky Ridge Medical Center, the hospital received three patients involved in the incident.  All of the patients received were considered non-critical at the time of arrival but was not able to specify if those patients were law enforcement officers or civilians. Alyssa Parker with Littleton Adventist Hospital confirmed this hospital has taken in an additional four patients in connection with the shooting however, she was unable to comment on if their condition was critical or if they were law enforcement.

The official Douglas County Sheriff’s twitter account known as DC Sheriff has been keeping the community apprised of the situation as developments continue to happen.

“Due to this incident, the following agencies are on accident alert. Douglas County, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department and Colorado State Patrol.”

Law enforcement reports that domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous for any law enforcement agency to potentially walk into.  They report officers are going potentially into a killing zone every time they walk up to someone’s door on such a call.

The scene is active and people are advised to avoid the area. The scene is considered a “Code Red.” In a “Code Red” anyone who lives in the area is urged to shelter in place, avoid windows and stay away from exterior walls. An emergency shelter has been set up at Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Eastridge at 9568 S University Blvd. Anyone who has been displaced from their homes because of this incident is encouraged to head there. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department tweeted out –

“Due to the size and scope of this investigation an emergency shelter has been set up @ East Ridge Rec Center, located at 9568 University Blvd. in Highlands Ranch. If anyone has been displaced from their homes due to this event please feel free to head there.”

“We have multiple officers down,” said Deputy Jason Blanchard of the incident at Copper Canyon Apartments in Highlands Ranch. “We are not giving numbers or status at this point, we are still working on getting the suspect in custody.”

The scene is not even clear and full details are not even known and gun control advocates are already taking to social media railing against the NRA and personal gun ownership, attempting to politicize the entire event. One such gun control advocated stated –

“Remember, although heinous, acts like these are the price Americans pay for gun access so we can hunt meat that’s cheaper in store, or have fun at range for an hour. Let us all pray in thanks to these deputies for allowing their spilled blood to continue fertilizing tree of NRA.”

Yet another Twitter user was quick to point out in response –

“The people attacking our gun rights are taking the wrong thing from this. If guns kill people, then i guess spoons make people fat and cars drive drunk! Outlaw guns, and only outlaws will have guns. Blue lives matter! Prayers out to the officers that lost everything for us!”

Many others were just as disgusted with the acts of the those attempting to politicize a tragic situation and let those people know, tweeting – “You have no idea what the details are but yet here you are politicizing the situation. You’re sick.”

Our prayers are with those injured and their families with hopes for a full recovery as we continue to watch events unfold and additional information is released concerning this tragic situation.
