Being a mother is no joke! From the moment you open your eyes in the morning to the moment your head hits the pillow, your every thought is about how to keep your child healthy and happy, especially in those first few years.
For single mothers, it can be even more difficult. Without a partner to balance the load, things like self-care and education often have to go by the wayside, at least for a time.
Single mom Morgan King knows very well just how hard it can be. When she had to miss a class to take care of her daughter recently, she had no idea her professor would react the way she did…
When you’re a single mother like University of Tennessee student Morgan King, balancing the care of your baby and getting your schoolwork done can be a real struggle. Sometimes, there just aren’t enough hours in the day.
Morgan recently missed a class after her childcare unexpectedly fell through. She made sure to send an email alerting her instructor as to why Morgan was absent. She had a valid reason for missing the class, but she still felt nervous reaching out…
Morgan knew that, in order to be a good mom to her baby daughter, Korbyn, she would have to make plenty of sacrifices. She kept her fingers crossed that choosing to stay home with her daughter that one day instead of leaving her with a stranger so she could attend class wouldn’t negatively affect her learning.
Morgan had anticipated many different reactions from her lecturer, Dr. Sally Hunter, but when she read her professor’s response, she couldn’t believe that what she was seeing was real. It was so much more than Morgan ever expected…
In her note, Dr. Hunter started off by saying how much everyone had missed Morgan in class. She went on to say that the absence would be marked as excused and that Morgan could easily make up the work she missed. But that was just the start…
“In the future, if you are having trouble finding someone to watch Korbyn, feel free to just BRING HER with you to class,” wrote Dr. Hunter. “I would be absolutely delighted to hold her while I teach, so that you can still pay attention to the class and take notes.”
As a single mother, Morgan was completely accustomed to having to figure out these tough parenting decisions all on her own. The fact that her teacher was so willing to help out moved her to tears. She was beyond moved by Dr. Hunter’s kind message.
Morgan was so touched by what Dr. Hunter had offered to do for her that she shared the note with the world on Twitter. It struck a chord with parents everywhere who applauded the teacher for her kindness and understanding.
Beverly Davenport, the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, was among those who saw the response that Dr. Hunter had emailed to Morgan and was quick to praise the faculty member for setting such an amazing example.
Raising a child is not an easy task, and Morgan’s story is proof that it really does take a village. While trying to raise a child on your own can be exhausting, the loving help offered by family and friends can make all the difference in the world.
Morgan’s teacher probably no idea that just by sending that little note she was making such a big difference in her student’s life. This is such a great example of how wonderfully supportive our communities can be!
